The Wall Explained

I have enjoyed reading Competitor Magazine and following them on twitter @RunCompetitor for what is the latest and greatest in the running world. Susan Lacke has a column called Out There where she posted this “Anantomy of the Bonk” that was so great and I had to share with you.

I have run 18, 20, and 22 miles in training and have not experienced the wall aka the bonk yet. I am a little nervous about hitting this on race day. Thankfully, I have talked with some fellow marathoners and she assured me that it does not last forever like I thought. My friend, Monica who ran NWM last year told me she experience the issues below but it only lasted 1/2 mile… which still seems pretty terrible at any distance.

I am making sure that I am fueling up every 4 miles during the race and have found what works for me. 1 Honey Stinger @ mile 4, 1 pack of Chomps @ mile 8, 1 Honey Stinger waffle @ mile 12, 1 pack of Chomps @ mile 15, 1 pack of Chomps @ mile 18. It seems like a lot, but I am still on the verge of hunger during training. I am praying that I do not fear the wall and just embrace it as a reality. (I say this now days before race day, we will see.)
