No, not hot wings or grilled chicken, I’m talking about qualifying for the most coveted race for distance runners. The Boston Marathon in all it’s glory! Qualifying times are hard to reach, but if you finish in your time is a feat in itself. My mom’s goal was to do a Better than a Boston Qualifying time…. affectionaly named BBQ.
My mom was trying to get a BBQ this December at the Dallas White Rock Marathon. It was her 2nd marathon, but she is strong enough to qualify for Boston. It is just incredible to watch her determination. Her stride was strong even at the end of the race despite the ridiculous weather conditions.
No excuses, but we all know that weather is a huge factor in races. This race was driving freezing, cold rain on runners all through the start, during all 4 hours, and barely let up at the finish of the race. Brrrr…. this is 1 reason I did my first marathon in Cali!!
She was on track with her splits up until mile 23 when she thought she had to go to the restroom. All the wet clothes and freezing fingers made this trip difficult and costly time wise. She needed a 4:05 to qualify or sub-4:05 for a BBQ…. she ran a 4:09… missing her Boston Qaulification by 4 minutes. Which, considentially was the time it took for the unnessary potty break.
She was so bummed, but I was so proud of her! She beat her previous marathon time by 12 minutes. This is a huge accomplishment for any distance runner! We will have to save our Boston trip for next year.
All I know, is that I have incredible genes! So excited to see what lies ahead for our racing family.
The new Boston Qualifying Changes…. its getting faster and more difficult to qualify. As it should to keep the tradition on the fastest runners in the country!
